The ID Space Vizzion has a big responsibility — it is charged with defining a new electric vehicle segment, and it is on par to do just that! Considered the “wagon of tomorrow” that combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV, the ID Space Vizzion is planned to be presented by VW as a production vehicle at the end of 2021. The seventh concept vehicle in the ID series revealed in Los Angeles, this car is VW’s new, fully electric segment made clear…It is high-tech and all the buzz, capable of three rows of seating and is the future of electrification!

Interior revealed
Interestingly, the focus of this concept’s interior is sustainable raw materials brought forth in such ways as an “AppleSkin” material used in place of leather. This artificial vegan alternative to leather, as the name indicates, is made of the residual materials from apple juice production. It is used on the seats, door trim, and center console arm rests. Plastic inserts and film are also replaced by AppleSkin, the result of which is reducing the use of polyurethane in the cabin.
Overall, the interior is spacious as VW had the opportunity to increase it as well as optimize aerodynamics due to the fact that electric vehicles do not need to accommodate an engine or radiator and also because the electric drive components are fairly small. Even though the overall vehicle size is more like that of a midsize car, the spacious interior is similar to a luxury model. Space is found in this midsize concept, with 20.7 cubic feet behind the seats, perfect for luggage similar to what is presented in SUVs.
And while the concept has four seats, a five-seat model could also be a possibility. VW refers to the interior as limousine-like comfort.
A long, luxury-like visual profile that maintains the rugged look many desire is brought forth in this concept. While similar to previous ID concepts in design, the Space Vizzion evolves that look while adding some new features that are exciting. For example, honeycomb-type LED daytime running lights serve as X-shaped turn signals, with matching X-shaped LED signals in the rear, making this concept sleek and oh so stylish. A new light-up VW logo sits proudly at the front tip of the hood, flanked by slim white LED strips. The ID Space Vizzion has a sleek look with illuminated touch surfaces instead of traditional door handles, which also improves airflow along the sides of the concept. Not only do the touch surfaces light up when the Keyless Advanced function senses that someone with a key or smartphone mobile app key is nearby, but that surface vibrates, the light pulses and the floor opens. The overall design of this concept maximizes its aerodynamics without a doubt, with several new surfaces ensuring air moves smoothly. That includes such things as a horizontal slot between the headlights and an integrated spoiler-type panel above the tailgate. Even the 22-inch wheels have special designs to minimize airflow disruption. Handleless doors are now touch-sensitive haptic pads which illuminate as the driver approaches.
The ID Space Vizzion concept is powered by a rear-mounted 275-horsepower electric motor and an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the electric drive motor. This concept also can be equipped with a 101-horsepower motor in front, which gives the vehicle all-wheel-drive (which VW calls 4Motion) and increases overall system output to 335 horsepower.
The 4Motion version of this concept can travel from 0-60 in 5.0 seconds, and has an electrically limited top speed of 109 mph. With the rear-drive version, the projected range is up to 300 miles. Impressively, the vehicle can be charged to 80 percent of capacity in about 30 minutes.
The ID Space Vizzion offers its conceptual drivers the choice between two powertrains, with a 275 horsepower electric motor being considered standard. It sends 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Upgrade to the 4Motion with the addition of a 101-horsepower electric motor for the front wheels, bringing the total system output to 355 ponies.
All digital, all the time
A new approach to intuitive usability, the ID Space Vizzion has a completely digital cockpit. Driver information is shown primarily on an Augmented Reality head up display, with this display in place of the traditional gauge setup. As a result, all entertainment, information, comfort, online functions and vehicle settings are seen in a 15.6-inch touch screen in the center of the dash. A multifunction steering wheel has capacitive touch panels, and a simple switch on the right side of the steering column serves as a notching shift lever.
Beneath it all
The ID Space Vizzion relies on the same set of basic components as the other ID concepts. Known as the modular electric toolkit, or MEB, Volkswagen expects the chassis to underpin about 20 million vehicles worldwide by 2029. With this concept and others, VW has shown off just how flexible its MEB electric-car platform can be. This concept has the spaciousness of an SUV, but is wrapped in a sexier package.
With the ID Space Vizzion, VW is not just providing a flashy design concept, but has committed to a production version in the very near future. Stylistic, futuristic and spacious, the Space Vizzion plans to be released in 2021 in different versions in North America and worldwide.
