ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE show car enters series production

What we know!

A year after the premiere of the show car, and Volkswagen is launching a limited edition like no other! The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE speaks to all-out exclusivity, with design highlights and paintwork that is truly eye-catching. With roots linked to the legendary Golf II Fire and Ice, an icon and cult classic in the 90s, it’s no surprise this new model excites and heads straight for production.

Martin Sander, a member of the Volkswagen Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and After Sales, speaks to this likely path following the unveiling of the show car at the ID. Treffen in Locarno in 2024: “The response to last year’s show was overwhelming. Many Volkswagen fans expressed a strong desire to see this car enter series production, and we were only too happy to make that wish a reality.”

“The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE demonstrates the emotive appeal of our premium sports model, while also carrying a piece of Volkswagen history into the electric future.”

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE features powerful motors, a large battery and high-charging capacity. Specifically, it is available with two motor options, the 210 kW and the 240 kW. At both these levels, the electric motor boasts a maximum torque of 55 Nm, and with the special edition version jumps from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

It derives its electric energy from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery which can be charged at DC quick-charging stations with up to 185 kW. In simple terms, with this power the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 26 minutes, and the combined WLTP range is up to 591 km.

The paintwork on this ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is truly where the beauty lies. Its Ultra Violet Metallic paintwork provides a unique colour scheme that pays homage to the legendary Golf predecessor, available in a similar shade. There is a roof frame strip that adds a sporty touch, with its Flaming Red color shining through. The C-pillar is adorned with a transparent matt decal

showcasing the geometric FIRE+ICE pattern, while a roof spoiler features the Fire and Ice logo from the 1990s.

There is also a set of 20-inch Locarno rims adding to its appeal, and which serve to emphasize the car's dynamic presence and Ultra Violet Metallic anodised paint. A striking red is also found on the GTC centre wheel trim.

The latest and greatest LED taillights have been tinted as part of the exclusive touches found here. There are also light projections that appear on the doors when they are opened, displaying graphics fittingly showcasing elements of fire and ice on both the driver and passenger side.

Within, there is a striking two-tone color scheme with the accent color, “On Fire Red,” dominating the seats and stitching on the driver side, contrasted on the passenger side seats with design elements in “Keep Cool Blue.” Customization is also found within the steering wheel, instrument panel, door trim and floor mats, with the seats also quilted and in the style of down jackets with the FIRE+ICE logo in the center.

Collaborating with BOGNER, designers from Volkswagen enjoyed a true creative partnership. “The revival of the cooperation between Volkswagen and BOGNER FIRE+ICE after more than 30 years and the realisation of a series production model is a major milestone for us. What started as a show car has become a market-ready vehicle that will excite both fans of the iconic Golf II Fire and Ice and a new generation. It is a strong statement for the relevance of connecting fashion and mobility.”

With this model is a wide range of features as standard, which can be combined in different packages. Some include such added benefits as premium sport seats with electric massage function, an Assistance Package, a Convenience package with a navigation system and much, much more.

The back story!

It was in 1990, when the German car was still in its second generation, that Volkswagen introduced the Fire and Ice special edition of the second-generation Golf, offering exclusivity made clear in both sportiness and comfort. Born from a collaboration with entrepreneur, fashion designer and director Willy Bogner, the vehicle was flamboyant and fabulous, complete with dark violet purple effect paint, alloy wheels, a front spoiler and also powerful engine options. Quick to success and iconic status, the model achieved the sale of 16,700 units, exceeding original expectations of just 10,000.

The VW Golf is still being made obviously, as it is one of the most successful VW models. Currently in its eighth generation, it was actually ignored by VW when it decided to revive Fire and Ice and honor the original Mk2. The Germans opted, instead, for the much newer and electric ID.3 in GTX Guise, morphing into what is now called the special edition FIRE+ICE.

With eye-popping style, all-out power and just downright coolness, this special edition has ignited a passion! Keep an eye out for its availability!
