2025 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. Toyota RAV 4
July 10 2025 - Volkswagen Of Akron

The face off!

In comparing the base-spec models, things like style, affordability and overall performance come into play. The RAV4, now in its fifth generation after debuting in 2019, is distinguished by chiseled and pronounced body lines, with its aggressive headlights drawing inspiration from Toyota pickup trucks. Its lower radiator grille is undoubtedly its most notable design element. Aggressive and tough, and founded on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform, this vehicle boasts a sharp design that strays from the conventional soft styling of most SUV models.

By comparison, and perhaps more to the liking of many motorists, the Tiguan features a softer style than previous iterations, and in its third generation has enjoyed a complete redesign on the familiar yet evolved VW MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform, which capitalizes on space. With shoulder overhangs and a new, bolder nose, the front fascia is distinguished by slimmer headlights connected by an optional LED light bar and sleek illuminated logo.

Soft still means an overall athletic-looking Tiguan, though, made clear in its silhouette featuring curved surfaces above the front fenders, which highlight its pronounced shoulder line. There is also a rear spoiler that extends the roofline while aiding aerodynamic efficiency. Standard are 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Under hood, the RAV4 is equipped with a larger 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder delivering 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the Tiguan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-, internally referred as the EA888 engine, delivering 201 hp, almost exactly on par with the RAV4. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the jump from 0-60 mph, the Tiguan inches ahead ever so slightly, coming in at 8.2 seconds, with the RAV4 at 8.3.

Aiding its performance and its acceleration are VW’s weight-saving efforts that have translated into a lighter Tiguan than its successor – 140 lbs to be exact. This is achieved mainly through the implementation of aluminum in the suspension system. Fuel economy is also a draw in the Tiguan, with the vehicle’s body structure’s high-strength, hot-formed steel that works with the revisions made to the suspension system.

While EPA ratings are not yet available on the latest models, both do boast an expansive array of safety systems, as well as driver assistance features that improve the overall experience. The RAV4’s TNGA-K platform results in exceptional collision protection, and the drive assistance system is intended to prevent collisions. In addition, Toyota’s second-generation Safety Sense system includes a vast array of features like Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign assist and more. The Tiguan is neck and neck in this area, matching these systems as well, in addition to more down the pipeline that VW has not yet unveiled.

In a somewhat unchanged interior, the fifth-generation RAV4 has leather-trimmed seats, which serve as the focal point on the entry-level model, as well as an 8-inch infotainment screen, a 7-inch digital driver display and an ash gray fabric-trimmed headliner.

By contrast, the Tiguan has enjoyed extensive interior changes, resulting in a minimalist center console area and new cabin elements that serve to elevate the quality within. Materials like American walnut wood mark the decor, as well as Savona leather throughout the cabin. VW’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro system comes standard, and alongside a new infotainment system featuring a 12.9-inch display. A 15-inch infotainment system is also offered, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is also available. Also, on the outside, there are changes, including three new exterior finishes – Avocado Green Pearl, Ascot Grey and Monterey Blue Pearl, hues surely to catch one’s eye on the open road.

While the Tiguan’s price is not yet available, the 2025 RAV4 comes in at a starting price of $30,245 for the entry-level model and an MSRP of $38,550 for the range-topping limited model. Last year, for comparison, the Tiguan range was from about $30,305 to $40,305.

Overall, when you look at fuel economy, interior layout and driver assistance features, plus available options, the Tiguan stands out and stands tall, with eager handling for a compact SUV, a nice turbo-four engine and a spacious interior. Improving on the previous model’s appealing formula, this vehicle has it all! Complete with European flair and all-things new in the 2025 model year, this is truly your next best choice. Compact contenders have a winner – and the Tiguan takes the top prize!
