2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport - VW of Akron

‘Cross’ over and double the fun!

With the all-new VW Atlas Cross Sport, motorists are not only getting a robust and reliable vehicle, but double the offerings typically presented in popular compact and midsize SUV segments. It’s about more choices, more convenience, more style and greater performance when you need it most. Drivers are getting an upscale take on an existing model as well as additional technology and a sharp, new exterior…. This is a more athletic and stylish version of the current Atlas and that’s not all!

All you need to know about the Cross Sport….

A five-passenger version of the larger seven-seat Atlas, the Cross Sport boasts a roomy second row that is perfect for passengers of all ages and sizes.  Add to that 77.8 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down, and drivers have the ability to comfortably carry whatever they desire! The interior gets new lighting up front that extends the width of the center bar of the three-bar chrome grille, between the hood and a more aggressive bumper. Inside, the list of available features is endless and ranges from wireless phone charging to rear sunshades and a premium sound system, plus much, much more!

In terms of bringing forth a coupe-like design, the Cross Sport is 2.8 inches shorter than the Atlas and 2.3 inches lower. Even with this change, the interior space remains the same. That interior has been enhanced and upgraded with a new steering wheel, ventilated front seats and a Fender audio system. The Cross Sport also comes in higher trim levels, which offer a cool digital cockpit.

The Cross Sport comes with two engine choices, which include the 276-hp, 266-lb-ft 3.6-liter V6 and the 235-hp, 258-lb-ft turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine. Both are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Cross Sport is a bit quicker than the Atlas, which recorded a 7.2-second zero-to-60-mph-time, with front-wheel drive and the turbo four, and 7.9 seconds with all-wheel-drive and the V6. It also features Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The V-6 has the ability to tow 5,000 pounds!

Exterior styling features similar design cues to the Atlas, but the Cross Sport boasts an upright front grille, squared-off wheel walls and a prominent body-side crease. It is modern and muscular with unique touches like a sloped roof and steeply raked rear window. Choices for an even bolder appearance can be found in the R-Line models which feature unique front and rear bumpers as well as chrome and piano-black exterior trim. A stunning panoramic sunroof that measures nearly 5 feet long allows for spectacular views on your next road trip. LED taillights are not only efficient and long-lasting, but give a stylish, sleek appearance.

Double the sportiness is also found in this Cross Sport in that it is shorter and lower.

Passengers also experience the amenities of a wirelesses charging pad for compatible smartphones, new to the Atlas lineup, and also the features of a Fender premium stereo system and 4G LTE Wi-Fi, among other amenities.

The Cross Sport comes with new technologies, including the CarNet app of connected features. In fact, the all-new Cross Sport holds the designation of being one of the first vehicles to take advantage of the new CarNet! This app not only allows drivers to start and stop their Cross Sport remotely, but also allows drivers to set a navigation destination in advance — a great convenience for today’s motorists. It will also connect to smart home devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home, so that Alexa can check how much gas you have for example. Drivers will have the ability to connect up to four devices to Car-Net Hopspot for internet access. Many CarNet services will be included at no charge for the first five years.

Other highlights in the area of technology include a large 10.1-inch touchscreen, as well as an even bigger, completely digital 12.3-inch digital cluster.

Also new in the Cross Sport are two driver-assistance features. Making their debut in this model is Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display. Traffic Jam Assist, which uses the front camera and front radar sensor to help maintain following distance from the car in front, safely helps drivers inch along at speeds up to 37 mph, bringing the vehicle to a full stop and then restarting again if the traffic moves within 3 seconds. If longer, a tap of the gas pedal or the “Resume” button on the steering wheel will get the car in motion again if adaptive cruise and lane keep are active.

Dynamic Road Sign Display is a road sign detection system that alerts drivers to speed limits, school zones, and other signs using a series of icons on the car’s navigation screen. The system can display multiple signs simultaneously when appropriate.

Other highlights in the area of safety brought forth in the Cross Sport includes forward collision warning with autonomous braking, blind sport monitoring and Rear Traffic Alert. All of these are offered across the lineup with higher trims seeing the addition of adaptive cruise control and some parking assistance.

Speaking of trims, the Cross Sport is presented in various trim levels, including the base S, SE, SEL, R-Line, SEL Premium and SEL Premium R-Line. This car is a top competitor among the likes of the Ford Edge, Honda Passport and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

In the area of fuel economy, the Cross Sport has great appeal. It carries EPA fuel-economy estimates of 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined for the front-wheel drive model with the turbo four; adding all-wheel drive to that engine drops the ratings to 18, 23 and 20 mpg.

The newest addition to Volkswagen’s SUV line up, the 2020 VW Cross Sport is a sporty, upscale version of a car that is already turning heads. From the front end to the back, significant upgrades present a more upscale feel. Its distinction is made clear in angular lights, a smaller tailgate, a sportier rear bumper and the list goes on. Get inside one — complete with finer materials and upgraded tech features — and see how you double the fun! This luxurious SUV has plenty to offer!
