The Golf R pairs 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and is available in either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG goal clutch automatic transmission. This, coupled with the new R-performance torque vectoring 4MOTION all-wheel drive, results in exhilaration at every turn! This is expert engineering at its finest! This power also contributes to superb handling reaching entirely new levels in 2022, with even more agility than ever before and maximum control at all times.
The Golf R can distribute up to 100 percent of the rear torque to an individual rear wheel to maximize your cornering grip. There is also the ability to experience a new track-only “Drift” mode, which sends all available rear torque to the outside wheel, as well as a new “Special” setting, built for the highest performance around Germany’s infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack.
Evolved exterior
An evolved exterior design is found here, with the new Golf R longer and sportier than its predecessor. This vehicle features a brand new electronic architecture, while paying homage to the styling hallmarks of the past Golf R models. An example is the blue-painted brake calipers and distinctive C-pillar, as well as a more sharply raked hood, new blue stripe in the grille, new lighting, including an illuminated crossbar underneath and new LED lighting front and back, and wheel design, as well as a performance spoiler. Each new body panel of this vehicle was designed for unrestricted airflow. Features such aero-optimized exterior mirrors and refined wheel arch linings and extensive underbody paneling breathes confidence and maturity.
Interior boost
Car enthusiasts — this is your perfect interior! Completely redesigned, the inside of the all-new Golf R perfectly pairs enthusiast-focused features with state-of-the-art technology. There is ample comfort found within as well as a nod to practicality. Roomy for plenty of luggage, with space that rivals many midsize sedans, the interior is sure to please. There are newly designed sport seats covered in Nappa leather as well as a 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Seat panels and stitching are beautifully presented with a matching blue, with both front and rear heated seats. Rest your hands on a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel with perforated inserts and an ergonomic “D” shape.
Ambient lighting is also found within, spilling color into an already captivating interior. In fact, drivers have their choice of 30 colors that will illuminate the decorative trim in the dash and doors as well as the storage compartments. Digital instruments also take on the selected background color.
There is also an enlarged panoramic power tilt and slide sunroof that comes standard in 2022, operated simply by a touch slider at the front of the headliner.
Tech savvy
A 10.25-inch display is one of the many enhancements linked to the advanced Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro system, which is standard on Golf R models. The display offers three views, including full-screen navigation, and 21 viewing options. That includes anything from car status and navigation to driving data, phone information and more. Through the standard Discover Pro navigation system, drivers can take advantage of the display of a full screen map in the digital cluster and simultaneously on the center display.
There are also new graphics linked to this model for 2022, and they can be accessed with the new View button on the steering wheel. This “R” view presents a combination of three instruments. Those include the rev counter with “R” logo in center; flanked by two customizable instruments.
Thanks to and MIB3 Infotainment system, the all-new Golf R features an innovative touchscreen, with the display utilizing a capacitative-touch sensor as opposed to the more common resistive touchscreen that requires pressure. Bluetooth technology is standard here, as well as App-Connect smartphone integration for compatible devices. This allows drivers the ability to run select smartphone apps directly on the vehicle’s display through such services as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink.
A 10-inch display is standard, as is Volkswagen’s Discover Pro unit with navigation, and features wireless charging and wireless App-Connect for compatible devices, voice control, HD radio and more.
